Welcome to the heartland of
Jaunsar-Bawar!! The drive through the Tons Valley leaves you with a feeling
of being thrown back in time to a place that only fantasies can conjure. The
green alpine valley is full of multicolored flowers - nasturtiums with
bright yellow and red flowers, primulas, geraniums, white chrysanthemums,
and wild roses of various hues, junipers, cedar and birch forests which are
among the best in the entire Garhwal Himalayas. The valley is especially
famous for its green forests of pine and deodar trees - one of the best
forests in Asia. It is one of the most enchanting valleys for trekkers and
tourists.
For the uninitiated - the River Tons is the largest tributary of the River
Yamuna, and unlike the Yamuna it is teeming with life and its eternal
freshness. The water, so clear that it seems right of the mountains, its
flow through this scenic terrain makes you feel a part of its timelessness.
Enroute, at Netawar, there is a temple here dedicated to Duryodhan (the
eldest brother of the Kauravas of the epic Mahabharata) that is the only
temple of its kind. There are two other gods whom the people in this valley
worship. One of them is Pokhu, whose temple is at Netawar and the other is
Mahasu whose temple is in Anol.
In the upper reaches of the Tons river is situated the Gobind Pashu Vihar
sanctuary, a high altitude preserve and is approached from the Rupin valley
near Natwar. This spectacular sanctuary, ringed by high peaks and hemmed in
on three sides by ice fields and snow beds, this amphitheatre is the source
of the Tons river and home to many high altitude bird species like snow
cock, snow partridge and the Monal pheasant.
Here is a river rafting experience that is as different as it can get,
leaving you completely enamoured
and if you though time is meaningless, you are so absolutely
right!
